2nd Grade Space Week Rocket to Another Planet...

Each year we celebrate Space Week at the end of September.
In second grade I have students think about what it would be like to travel to another planet. It is something they might actually get to do in their life time.

The first step is to create a new world, a planet far away.
What would the ground look like?
What would the new sky look like?
Draw your outlines using a black crayon and then use watercolor paint
to create your new planet.
Next we use a straw to create Nebulas.
Place a very watery drop of paint on the paper and
then using your straw blow as had as you can to create
streaks in the paint.
I make sure to tell the kids not to share their straws and
the straws much be thrown away as soon as you are done using them.

To create the rocket we use a separate sheet of paper and then color it with markers.
When the rocket has been colored students will cut it out and glue to on their new planet.

2nd Grade Painted Paper Owls...

2nd grade created these cute owls using all the scrap painted paper we collected throughtout the year.
I got this awesome idea from  Laura Lohmann when I was at ART SCOUTS last year in Ohio. I am going again this year 2017 in Tennessee, it is a lot of fun!

2nd Grade Shine Brite...

This is our inspiration piece. I saw it on Pinterest and fell in love with.

2nd Grade Fish Prints Collage In the Style of Eric Carle...

First we randomly painted a 12x18 inch 90# piece of white paper using 2 colors of tempera paint.
My tables are set up by color so I put out the corresponding color paint on each table. Students were able to more to the table color of their choice.

The paintings were put on the drying rack for next week.

The following week students flipped the paper over and drew a large fish of their own design. Then cut it out.

Make sure to save the cut out parts of the paper, we will be using them later in the project.

I put out the colors again the second week but this time I gave them sponge stamps the 5th grade had cut for one of their projects.
Students used the sponges to create designs on their fish.

I use to just paint on the tables but I learned to use over sized manila paper for place mats at
It makes it easier to put the fish on the drying rack too.

Place the stamped fish on the drying rack for next week.

In the third rotation students use the scrap painted papers from the fish to create seaweed...

and layers on their fish.

Make sure to keep an eye on the sink.....

2nd Spiders and Trash Monsters...

2nd Grade created Spiders out of construction paper and colorful webs for Halloween.

5th grade found the scraps from the cut out spiders in the recycle bin and thought they looked like monsters so they created scrap creatures...

5th grade glued the scraps in their journals and added painted scraps as
the eyes and other parts.

It was a proud day as an art teacher!

2nd Grade Name Lines, Circles, Warm and Cool...

First write your name big in Block letters using a Sharpie. If you have 3 or fewer letters in your name (like I do, Lee) then also use the first letter of your last name.

Next step is to fill the page with lines using a ruler or other straight edge.

Next fill the page with circles making sure to cut through your name somewhere.
I have saved up and been donated a lot of plastic lids that we use as tracers.

When you start to color your project you have to choose if you want the warm colors inside your name or the cool colors. Which ever you choose for your name then the other colors go outside your name. Here Diego has selected to do the cool colors in side his name so the warm colors will be outside his name.

Cool in side
Warm outside

Here Yani has selected to do the warm colors inside his name so he will use the cool colors outside his name. Remember to change colors every time you come to a line.
